Biography

I was born in the North East of England where I was educated at a technical/agricultural school but I did not follow the rural route. As an only child I lost myself in Bunty's comics with their cut out paper dolls, which inspired me to make wardrobes of paper clothes and accessories. My childhood activities combined with my interest in clothes led me to pursue a career in fashion design. I moved to London to study for a degree and worked in the fashion industry for several years before starting a family.

As a family we lived in Cameroon, West Africa for four years, giving us a view of a different world. My time in Africa's equatorial climate made me aware of the locals glowing, radiant, glistening skin tones and strong features so different to Europeans. It was fascinating to occasionally see African albinos whose features looked out of proportion on their pale freckly faces, topped with curly ginger hair. On working trips to India, once again I observed the beautiful hues of dark skin this time set against vibrant coloured saris, which was such a contrast to white skin tones. Under English skies, the northern light gives our pale skins delicate, almost transparent, flesh tones.

Now I live in Richmond, Surrey, within easy reach of London's cultural world, mass of activities and multi racial community. This has fuelled my interest and love of art which drove me to do a Fine Art degree at Wimbledon college of Art.

My work has turned full circle. Now instead of clothing figures I have taken 'the Emperor's new clothes' approach and stripped humanity of its defences. Nudes laid bare, exposed, vulnerable to our gaze. I have an immense and unending interest in the human form, people clothed or unclothed. With a fascination for the variety of shapes and sizes, skin tones and colouring I have developed a series of works in a figurative vein on 'the body observed.'
